The Clay County Domestic Violence Court launched in October 2023, as a way to create accountability for domestic violence offenders. Anyone in this court has either had a finding of domestic violence in civil court or has a pending domestic violence criminal charge.
The Honorable Alisha O'Hara oversees the program in Division III. Domestic Violence Court is held the second Tuesday of each month at 1:30pm for new participants and 2:00pm for returning participants. Court is held in person, unless explicitly directed otherwise.
Participants in the DV Court program must first complete assessments for batterers' intervention, mental health and substance abuse treatment. After the initial assessment, participants will be required to complete whatever treatment is deemed necessary by certified treatment providers including, but not limited to at least 48 weeks in batterers' intervention.
Domestic Violence Court was created fill a gap in the justice system. Despite being one of the most prolific types of crime, domestic violence is still not addressed as aggressively as it should be. DV Court hopes to curb recidivism rates, as well as provide resources to both victims and participants to help them change their lives.
